The Basics of Bedroom Styling you should know

July 3, 2020 Posted by Jo Smithers The basics of bedroom styling

Who doesn’t want to wake up in a dreamy bedroom, where the linen is fresh, the bed comfortable, and the side tables styled to perfection?
A bedroom should be a personal getaway, a sanctuary, which expresses your needs and your personality. Learn the golden basics to style your bedroom.

1. Choose a subtle colour

Bedrooms are sanctuaries of calm and relaxation, so choose soothing shades and a restful palette of monochromatic tones. Neutral schemes with soft whites and washed out pastel shades work best. Remember colour theory: gentle hues of grey, brown, blue or green are considered calm and serene.

However, bedrooms are an incredibly personal spaces and if you feel like going for a bold primary colour, add a statement wall or even patterned wallpaper, that is entirely up to you.

2. Set a focal point

The most important element of a bedroom is the bed itself. The style of your bed and bedhead will set the aesthetic and tone of the rest of your room. Your bed is the ultimate styling palette of your bedroom, so choose wisely.

Above all else your bed should be comfortable and functional. It should be a place that you never want to leave, made for lazy mornings, breakfasts in bed and cuddle time. Select a good quality bed frame that will last for years and a bedhead that reflects your personal style. Ensure you choose a bedhead that will remain timeless instead of following trends. Bed linen offers a great way to add colour and texture to your space. Choose matching colours that already exist in your scheme and loosen it up with textures and patterns. Personally, I’m an all white girl with lots of texture in my throws and accents.

3. Find the perfect match

While the bed forms the focal point of a bedroom, the space isn’t complete without a bedside table. It is one of the most functional pieces of furniture you can have in your bedroom. You can keep necessary items accessible without even getting up from the bed.

Choosing a bedside table is the perfect opportunity to play around a little. Because they’re generally small and available for all budgets. You can experiment with colour, shape and unusual pairings. They don’t have to be the same, but getting the mix of styles is essential.

There are different types of bedside tables that you can buy for your bedroom. Your choice may depend on your budget, the size of your room, the size of your bed and your storage needs.

  • Simple tables — designed for placing a few personal items and a lamp. They are suitable for small rooms as they occupy less space. Some are available with a single drawer…
  • Bedside drawer  — classic bedside table with storage and space on top for placing a lamp. They are more similar to a chest of drawers. Perfect to store books, magazines, and small items that are needed daily.
  • Small chest— fit for any room in your home, but perfect for bedside use. They offer enough storage to keep your bedroom free of clutter.
  • Shelves — a minimalist choice for clean and elegant schemes. The bedside table shelf can be space saving and practical for modern bedrooms.

Buying Tips

Bedside tables serve two functions. They provide a surface to place necessary items like a lamp, a book, a glass of water, hand cream or whatever else you may want to keep close by the bed. And they help anchor the bed, so it doesn’t look like it’s just floating in the room. Here are some tipps to keep in mind when shopping for bedside tables.

  • Size: It should depend on how much space is available by your bed. Bedside tables should always be about the same height as the mattress. Anything much higher or lower doesn’t look quite right. When it comes to depth, you don’t want anything too big that can make it a bit difficult to get in and out of bed.
  • Storage: Bedsides with drawers or chests are great because you can store books, personal items, or anything you want. But if you prefer a minimalist look something without extra storage space is the better choice.
  • Decor: a lamp, a clock and maybe a small vase of flowers or a photo frame is all you need. Remember that bedside tables are meant to be practical, so keep it simple.
  • To match or not to match?: The most common look is to have two matching tables on either side of the bed. However, here at La Maison we love the mix no match philosophy. So why not go for two complementary tables? You can use matching lamps on each table to bring the scheme together.

4. Keep it clean

Clutter is the enemy of sleep for many; for a bedroom to be a true sanctuary it must offer order as well as peace and quiet. The bedroom will appear more calm and roomy if you store things out of sight. Make sure you have plenty of storage to keep the room clean. Here are just a few examples for practical storage solutions:

  • Use a storage bench, an ottoman with storage function or a trunk at the foot of the bed to store extra sheets, blankets, and pillows.
  • For easily-reachable books and accessories, use shelves or drawers.
  • Place shallow boxes underneath the bed hiding them with a beautiful bed through.

5. Include a lounging corner

If you have a big bedroom and enough space, give yourself a special gift with a quiet place to sit and read. Create an intimate reading or lounging area with a comfortable chair in a corner of the room or by the window.

6. Play with textiles

There’s nothing that adds more comfort to a bedroom then beautiful linen. Especially 100 percent cotton or linen with a high thread count that will feel like you’re sleeping in a 5-star hotel.

Add other sensual feeling fabrics through the bedroom with a soft mohair or cashmere throw on the arm of a reading chair or a warm rug on the floor.

A beautifully dressed window will help to frame the window and the view and provide other ways to add colour, pattern, texture, and softness to a bedroom.

Let your bedroom be a real getaway.

Create a cherished place to relax and renew. Try to discipline yourself to keep your cell phone, computer or television out of the bedroom. You’ll love having a room dedicated to reading, sleeping, and romance.
