Meet Nyria and get an insight of her work.
I always knew I was creative but realised I was not necessarily an artist. Growing up I thought I wanted to be an art and drama teacher, until I was 15 years old. I remember exactly where I was standing at school, the bell had just rung and I had an epiphany that it was actually three dimensional space and furniture that I wanted to work with. That way I could combine my love for colour, patterns, shapes and space. I grew up in the country and wasn’t really exposed to interior design, I just naturally felt a pull toward it before I even knew what it was called.
Anything and everything can inspire me! It might be the architecture of the home, or an art piece or furniture item a client already owns that I need to work in with. The hero fabric and overall layout and vision will often come to me while I’m with the client in the initial briefing. Then when I leave I just have to find it all to put it together!
I probably do have quite a few without realising it… I see a lot of the same sorts of mistakes being made like wrong proportions of furniture and rugs or artwork hung too high. Cushions on a diagonal, that sort of thing.
I suppose I probably do have a certain style and signature to how I finish an interior, however I welcome any project in any style as I feel that it stretches me as a designer. I enjoy having different briefs so no two jobs are the same. I enjoy the research that goes into different design styles as I myself love so many different styles. I am mostly driven by what my client is asking for, but then I think it is up to me to deliver them an elevated response to their expectations, maybe throw a few things in that they wouldn’t think of themselves.
A lot of it is common sense, especially with selecting materials that are going to suit the client. I mean, a white linen sofa looks great when it’s new, but it’s not going to look like that for long, especially if it’s in a family’s home with young children. So it would obviously be better to select a fabric that will be serviceable and easy to clean.
It’s important for rooms to have a flow which comes back to furniture proportion and layout, and generally people love the idea of extra storage so I often have that in my mind when I’m selecting furniture or designing a space. Most people want to live in a home that is easily lived in and offers a level of comfort. I like my interiors to feel inviting, like you wouldn’t feel scared to sit down and have a drink in there. I like the balance of practical and pretty.
I love Veranda and Elle Decor magazines. I have quite a collection of beautiful interior books that I love and draw inspiration from. My two newest books are ”Australian Designers at Home“ by Jenny Rose-Innes and ”Inspired Design“ by Jennifer Boles. I love reading about other interior designers that have gone before me and what their stories are. There is something comforting to be able to read their thoughts and understand where they are coming from on a professional level, sharing the same career.
As for Instagram – there are so many and I’m going to miss so many important ones, but some of the accounts I love following are: Mallory Mathison Inc, Meredith Ellis, Brunchwig & Fils, Schmacher, Veranda Mag, Atlanta Homes Mag, Elizabeth M Lawrence, Nick Olsen, Charish Co, Mark D Sikes, John Rosselli, Steve Cordony, Scout and Nimble, Phoebe Howard, Gracie Studio, Colefax and Fowler & Tamsin Johnson.
Detail. Scale. Balance. A striking furniture piece. Beautiful fabrics. How it has all been arranged together into a cohesive space. The overall feeling of the room.
I have so many for so many reasons, they are all so different. Every project has it’s own story and process, I love that. And I love knowing that there will be many more to come where I will be stretched further and learn more.
I have many, sometimes it’s a curse loving beautiful things so much! It can be an expensive habit but it makes me happy. My latest acquisitions that I am enjoying are my Thibaut Emerald Silk wallpaper in my bedroom, a French Antique Louis XV commode with a green marble top, a zebra hide bed end stool, as well as a collection of artworks and plates that I have been collecting for some time that I am yet to hang on the walls. I bought some fabulous vintage Italian wall plates at an antique store when I was in New York last year, so I will always treasure those as a memory of my holiday.
A space that feels like my own with all of my things around me. Somewhere where I feel completely safe and relaxed. A place of rest and a place where I feel organised. I love being at home, just pottering around by myself or entertaining friends. Our homes are our sanctuaries, so it is important for our environments to reflect who we are and what we love.
